Acupuncture is a form of treatment which uses fine needles to affect the flow of the body's energy. By restoring the proper flow of energy it is possible to restore health.
Acupuncture works on the principles of Chinese medicine, a holistic system of medicine which treats the person rather than the symptom. Every treatment is tailor made for the individual patient. In this way for example, one patient's asthma will be quite different to another's, and will need a different approach. When treating babies and young children, needles are not retained but inserted and then removed immediately. In some cases it is not necessary to needle at all, and other methods may be used such as Moxibustion (a warming herb which is passed over the acupoints), Massage or Acupressure.

Your first appointment will take about an hour, and during this time your full medical history will be taken. It may be necessary to remove some of your clothing to allow for examination, so it is advisable to wear lose fitting clothes.
Your pulses (three on each wrist) will be taken, and the acupuncturist will also want to look at your tongue before making a diagnosis and deciding on a treatment plan.
Treatment
A very fine, sterile needle is inserted into each selected point. The number and location of the points will depend on your energy level and condition being treated. Needles may be removed immediately, or in some cases left in place for up to 20 minutes.
